Our mandate is to create a Black cultural, historical and social centre within Guelph/Wellington.
The Guelph Black Heritage Society (GBHS), founded in 2011, is dedicated to preserving and celebrating Black heritage in Guelph and Wellington County. At the heart of our work is Heritage Hall, originally built in 1880 as the British Methodist Episcopal (BME) Church by formerly enslaved Black individuals and their descendants who arrived in Canada via the Underground Railroad.
Today, Heritage Hall stands as a cultural landmark and community hub where history, education, and celebration come together. Through our programs, we raise awareness of local and national Black heritage, share stories of resilience and achievement, and address social issues that matter to Black Canadian communities.
Your support helps us restore and maintain Heritage Hall, deliver impactful initiatives such as Black Heritage Month events, youth camps, and cultural workshops, and ensure that the contributions of the Black community continue to enrich the quality of life in Guelph, Wellington, and beyond. Together, we can preserve this legacy and empower future generations.
