Gulf Islands Marine Rescue Society and RCMSAR25 provide on call marine search and rescue services in the waters around Salt Spring Island.
The Gulf Islands Marine Rescue Society (GIMRS) supports and raises funds for the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Station 25 (RCMSAR25). RCMSAR25 operates out of Vesuvius on Salt Spring Island, BC.RCMSAR25 provides around-the-clock marine search and rescue capabilities, assisting boaters and others who need help in the waters around Salt Spring Island. We are a volunteer organization, operating under the direction of the Canadian Coast Guard and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Victoria. In addition to our emergency services, RCMSAR25 volunteers provide loaner PFDs for kids at six Kids Don't Float kiosk on Salt Spring and Galiano Islands, offer safe boating programs to students in local schools and courtesy Pleasure Craft Safety Checks to the local marine community. We assist other local emergency services, including the Coast Guard, Salt Spring Search and Rescue, the RCMP, and Salt Spring Fire Rescue, as needed. We also investigate and report on oil spills reported in our area. GIMRS receives funding from the BC Government through the BC Gaming Grants program. We also receive some funding from the Coast Guard and both institutional and individual donations. Operating and maintaining the Amarah Gabriel, our Fast Rescue Craft, is costly, as is gear and equipment for our 35 volunteer crew. Unfortunately grant money alone is not sufficient to meet our ongoing costs. Your donations will help us to fund future engine replacement costs; maintenance and upgrades to onboard electronics: radar, electronic charts, communications systems; personal protective equipment for our crews: helmets, dry suits, PFDs; training; first aid and rescue equipment. Thank you for your support! For more information, please visit our website at rcmsar25.com or email us at gimrs@rcmsar25.com
