GUSTIN HOUSE - celebrating musical life and cultural tradition, in the service of performing artists, audiences, aspiring music students, and communities of heritage and arts in Saskatoon and beyond!
These ideals, flourishing in the Piano Studios established in 1920 by Lyell Gustin (1895-1988) are today’s commitment of Gustin/Trounce Heritage Committee (aka Gustin House). This is our range of activity:
1. Presenting recitals
Annual classical music recital series, with soloists and small ensembles from stages national and international, often featuring the return of artists who began their musical education and careers in Saskatchewan.
2. Hosting inter-arts events
Smaller-scale series at Gustin House, bringing together musicians, visual artists, writers, scholars and the general public to share art and insights and to strengthen bonds among the arts community.
3. Giving music scholarships
Eight scholarships offered annually to students of various ages and levels, awardees selected by external adjudication (through Music Festivals and other music organizations).
4. Promoting and celebrating Lyell Gustin legacy
Research on influential pianist and mentor Dr. Lyell Gustin (1895-1988), whose artistic lineage and that of all his “musical descendants” is traced back to Beethoven; and contacts/networking/communication for the international Gustin-related circle.
5. Preserving cultural and built heritage
Caring for built heritage, and collecting heritage items/archival materials related to Gustin House (built 1920, now restored) and Trounce House (built 1883 on the same lot, and oldest surviving building in Saskatoon), together designated Provincial Heritage Property as “Dr. Lyell Gustin Residence.”
