We present free public lectures on science, literature and the arts and give awards to teenage writers and local science-fair participants.
Our Mission1. To advance public education in the fields of literature, science and the arts via free public lectures.
2. To encourage Hamilton-area high-school students to develop their creative writing skills, become proficient with a musical instrument, or apply scientific methods to a science question that interests them.
3. To support the Hamilton Public Library's efforts to encourage aspiring young poets and short-story fiction writers through the HPL's annual Power of the Pen literary competition for local students aged 12 to 18 years.
4. To support the annual Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair's (BASEF) efforts to encourage local high school students to develop a passion for science and scientific research.
5. To support efforts by the Dundas Valley Orchestra to encourage young persons to explore their talents for music composition and performance on a instrument commonly used by orchestras.
More About What We Do
Annual Lecture Series: We organize and present annually eight or more free monthly public lectures (September to April). Our speakers--academics, professionals, writers, poets, visual and material artists--present on a variety of contemporary and historical subjects. A question and answer period for the audience follows each lecture.
da Vinci Science Fair Award: For work that combines originality with sound, demonstrated understanding of the scientific method. Up to $250 is awarded annually to a local student entered in the Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair (BASEF).
Maitland Banting Silver Quill Award: For originality combined with excellent command of language in short-story fiction. Up to $250 is awarded annually to a winner or runner-up in the HPL's Power of the Pen competition.
Young Musician Award: For excellence in performance with any instrument used in an orchestra, including piano. Up to $250 is awarded annually to a teenage musician. This award is administered in partnership with the Dundas Valley Orchestra. It includes an invitation to perform with the DVO during one of their concerts.
Young Poet Award: For originality combined with excellent command of language in poetry. Up to $250 is awarded annually to a winner or runner-up in the HPL's Power of the Pen competition.
