Exciting Times!
In the next twelve months, Habitat for Humanity GTA is primed to start as many as 75 new homes, if we can secure the necessary funds to keep pace with our build opportunities. Rain, wind or snow, we'll keep building. But we need your support.
Home Building Across the GTA
The affordable housing crisis is at an all-time high for low-income families in the Greater Toronto Area. According to the Poverty, Housing, and Homelessness report issued by the City of Toronto, one in five households lives in housing that is too small, needs repair, or is unaffordable. Now, more than ever, we are counting on your support. There are so many ways to give, and 100% of your donation will go directly to our home building program. That's because our ReStores cover all of the administrative costs of the organization.
By supporting Habitat for Humanity GTA, you are generating systemic change, promoting community economic development, and enabling deserving families to become financially self-sufficient. Our hand-up, not hand-out, solution not only increases the availability of social housing across the GTA, it enables low-income families to build assets, contribute to the tax base, reduce their dependence on other forms of social assistance and eventually break the cycle of poverty.
Proven Success
The Habitat program ensures that low-income families own their home, which has a two-fold effect: First, they no longer rely on the annual subsidy required to support affordable rental programs. Second, but more importantly, they move from the position of receiving assistance to one of contributing to the community through the payment of property taxes. Currently, Habitat GTA Partner Families contribute well over $500,000 in municipal revenues annually.
Beyond the economic impact, Habitat homeowners report multiple improvements in family wellbeing. Children's grades improve. Health improves. Family stress decreases. Community safety improves. More often than not, children go on to post-secondary education. And, all of the powerful benefits to Habitat partner families contribute to a stronger community and reduce reliance on social programs.
