OUR MISSION

The mission of Habitat for Humanity Mid-Vancouver Island is to build decent and affordable housing, enabling qualifying low-income families to own their own homes. By mobilizing volunteers and community partners in the building of affordable housing, we promote homeownership as a means of breaking the cycle of poverty.

We build strength, stability and independence through affordable homeownership.

ABOUT HABITAT FOR HUMANITY MID-VANCOUVER ISLAND

At Habitat for Humanity Mid-Vancouver Island, we strive to bring communities together to help families build strength, stability and independence through affordable homeownership. Founded in Nanaimo in 1994, we serve the Mid-Island area from Mill Bay to Ucluelet. To date, we have built 20 homes, renovated 3 homes, and served 23 families in Parksville, Ladysmith, and Nanaimo; and one of our strategic goals is to complete 8 additional houses by December 2019. Your contribution can help us achieve this goal.

In recent years, Vancouver Island has experienced increasing land prices that have inflated it beyond reach for many families. Decent housing is becoming increasingly difficult for lower income families, and they simply cannot afford the rents that are being charged and often are forced to live in deplorable conditions. Homeownership for most of these families is only a dream – virtually unfathomable.

We believe in a hand up, not a hand out. At Habitat Mid-Vancouver Island, we build and sell homes at fair market value, with no down payment and an interest-free mortgage, providing access to the housing market for low-income families. In addition, our ReStore, launched in 2001, was the first in British Columbia, and the 19th in North America. Today, revenue from the ReStore covers all the operating costs, allowing 100% of donations to go towards building new homes.

All families must go through a rigorous application process, homeownership training, and contribute 500 hours of volunteer work on the build, also known as "sweat equity". Once moved in, all Habitat homeowners are responsible for the payment of property taxes, city user fees, strata fees, insurance, maintenance and all additional costs associated with owning and maintaining a home.

Of course, our ability to supply decent, low-cost homeownership for these families depends on the support of the community and donors like you. Donations of time, land, money – and even building supplies – build homes, and build hope.

We thank you for your consideration and support in providing affordable homeownership.
