Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that partners with low-income, working families to provide affordable homeownership.
Habitat for Humanity Red Deer brings people together to build homes, communities and hope. With the help of donors like you, volunteers, and local partners, we are able to provide Central Alberta Families with affordable homeownership opportunities.
Our History
Habitat for Humanity Red Deer was established in 1994 with a group of dedicated volunteers. To date, we have built 50 homes for hard-working families across Central Alberta. Habitat for Humanity has completed newly built homes in Red Deer, Blackfalds, Lacombe, Sylvan Lake, Three Hills and Delburne.
How does Habitat for Humanity's Affordable Homeownership Program work?
Through dedicated trade partnerships, volunteer support, and monetary and in-kind donations, Habitat for Humanity builds safe, decent and affordable houses. Habitat houses are sold to partnering families accepted into the Affordable Homeownership Program using our affordable mortgage model. There is no down payment, no interest, and monthly payments are geared to their monthly income, never exceeding 30%. Each partnering family invests 500 hours of volunteer labour, even helping to build their home. We will also purchase homes back from families who are ready to move on from the program. When we buy back a home, the departing family keeps the equity that they have earned, giving them the opportunity to purchase a home at market value. We make any necessary repairs to the buyback home and sell it to another hard-working family in Central Alberta, entering our Affordable Homeownership Program.
Building healthier families and communities
Research has shown that Habitat homeowners are happier, healthier and more financially stable, which can allow them to return to school, learn a new trade or upgrade their job skills. Meanwhile, their children are more confident and do better in school.
But the benefits of a Habitat home reach far beyond the four walls these families help build. Through reduced reliance on social housing and food banks, better education and employment outcomes, and improved health, every Habitat home built helps create $175,000 worth of benefits for the local community.
