Habitat for Humanity Cornwall & The Counties
Founded in 1998, Habitat for Humanity Cornwall & The Counties is a non-profit organization working towards a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. Our mission is to mobilize volunteers and community partners in building affordable housing and promoting homeownership as a means to breaking the cycle of poverty. With the help of countless community volunteers we have provided 12 families with 28 children safe, decent and affordable housing.
In addition to our Home Build, we have increased our community presence and awareness through the creation of new relationships. Building on the strong international reputation of Habitat for Humanity, we continue to engage new corporate, media and individual partnerships throughout our local area. A key element to our increased community presence is the recent relocation of our ReStore. Previously located in Bonville, Habitat for Humanity Cornwall & The Counties opened operations at our new location, 1400 Vincent Massey Drive, Cornwall at the end of August 2017. In a few short months, our team has seen an increase in visibility, customer traffic, donations and sales. This has also meant greater recognition for our community partners and supporters.
We Provide A Hand Up, Not A Hand Out - Habitat for Humanity houses are sold to Partner Families.
These homes are not given away. Partner Families have to first qualify for a home. They must be employed with an annual income over $20,000 before deductions but less than $39,581 a year before deductions (for a family of four, based on LICO numbers). Monthly mortgage payments are calculated at 25% of a family’s income which covers the property taxes and principal payment to Habitat for Humanity Cornwall & The Counties.
Families must be willing to perform 500 hours of sweat equity (volunteer hours on a Habitat related project). This takes the place of a traditional financial down payment. These volunteer hours are primarily at Habitat Cornwall & The Counties events to help raise the awareness and the much needed funds to build the family’s home. Sweat equity hours are also encouraged in our ReStore and on home build sites.
By building homes at low cost, requiring no down payment and not charging interest on the mortgage, Habitat for Humanity is able to provide an opportunity or a "hand up" to families that would not otherwise qualify for a conventional mortgage.
The revolving fund for Home Ownership
The homeowners' monthly mortgage payments go into a fund that is used to build more homes. The more homes that exist, the more cash flow there is for future home builds. This "revolving fund" fuels exponential growth in the number of houses that are built over time.
Building a Community
Building a house is an expensive business. Costs include land, materials and services. With the help of Habitat volunteers, some of the labour costs are reduced. New materials are often donated and many professional trades’ people do not charge for their services.
We rely on volunteers to raise awareness of Habitat for Humanity Cornwall & The Counties through fundraising, ReStore sales and procurement and helping with the actual construction of a home. We encourage organizations interested in a home build project which builds the sense of teamwork to contact us.
