Habitat for Humanity Saskatchewan believes that everyone should have a safe, decent and affordable place to call home.
Approximately 30% of Canadian households live in substandard housing or core housing need. Many families spend 50% to 70% of their income on rent and struggled to buy groceries and pay their bills. Saving for a down payment is impossible.
Affordable rent means living in overcrowded housing. Pests, mould, inadequate upkeep and the threat of having to move are common. For those who grew up in poverty, buying a home means breaking the intergenerational cycle. Others turn to Habitat Regina to rebuild after a divorce or escaping from an abusive relationship.
To better meet the need for affordable housing, Habitat for Humanity Saskatchewan is serving 21 families across the province this year!
Families that have been approved for the Habitat Saskatchewan Home ownership Program contribute 500 volunteer hours to the community and attend classes on topics such as mortgages, taxes, and home insurance. Families buy their homes at fair market value with an interest-free mortgage through Habitat Saskatchewan set at 25% of their income. Habitat Saskatchewan reinvests their payments into The Fund for Humanity, which is used to build more homes.
