Hamilton Out of the Cold

about

HOOTC was established in December 1997 at James St. Baptist Church by two retired teachers, Gloria Colizza and Sister Carole Anne Guay. From its humble beginning of one site, HOOTC has grown significantly to serving hot meals five nights a week from 11 locations in the Hamilton area.

In our 27th year, Hamilton Out of The Cold (HOOTC) celebrates the tireless efforts of our incredible volunteers, the privilege of serving free meals to our deserved guests and our supportive donors who help us to continue to provide much needed sustenance in our community every November - March.

From the first meal served to a lone guest in 1997 to the 30,484 dinners served last season, the Mission to provide hot, nutritious free meals for those in need in the Hamilton community has not waivered. Citizens who are struggling with hardship come to Hamilton Out of the Cold for hot, nutritious meals and warm companionship. Every meal comes with a side of dignity and compassion.

Our guests include the elderly, families, children, the working poor, the unemployed, those living with mental and physical health issues and those who struggle with loneliness and homelessness. All are welcome to attend. No one is turned away.

Our locations know no denomination, no judgement and are each a welcoming space within our community. Nourishing people, nurturing hearts and building community through free hot meals and welcoming support is the vision that guides HOOTC and its donors.

We provide reprieve from the cold at our warm Cafés, nutritious hot meals at our sit-down dinners and takeaway meals for those in need. We provide weekly lunches for the children living in the Overflow Hotel in Hamilton and we share meal overages with Living Rock Ministries on Wilson Street.

HOOTC is a not-for-profit, non-denominational program. It is a volunteer-based, low-barrier meal program. We are sustained by both financial and food donations graciously given by local groups, foundations, businesses, and individuals.

As we strive to alleviate hunger, we hope that the Hamilton community continues to support the work of our over 350 incredible volunteers.
