BEING Studio is a community of artists with developmental disabilities in Ottawa. At BEING, artists have access to the space, the tools, and the representation to create and commercialize their visual art and creative writing. Since 2005, the organization has operated out of a one-room studio in what used to be a high school classroom.
This campaign supports a project to update and professionalize BEING artists' studio space. Our goal of raising $40,000 will close the gap between the cost of the project and a capital improvement grant that we recently received from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. We are completely remodeling the studio, expanding capacity by 40% to better serve the community, building better storage, purchasing specialized art equipment and creative technologies, making upgrades to the HVAC and lighting systems, and generally making the space more functional as an art studio. We are also professionalizing the look of the studio, and creating a display wall for collectors and curators to be able to visit and view artworks.
Your gift will contribute to building an accessible and professional art studio for BEING artists, creating more opportunities for disabled artists to make, share and sell their artwork. This campaign also offers you the opportunity to participate in shifting cultural conversations around whose voices are heard, what perspectives are valued, and whose creative expression is allowed to thrive in a professional context.
