Urgent appeal for the Turkey and Syria Earthquake

In the early hours of February 6th, 2023, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Türkiye and northern Syria, destroying hundreds of buildings, and killing thousands of people – a number that will continue to rise as recovery efforts continue. Freezing temperatures and the aftermath of a second earthquake present added layers of danger and complexity to the crisis.

HelpAge is working with its partner, the Syrian Expatriates Medical Association (SEMA), who are actively providing emergency medical response. Casualties are increasing and those that were rescued need shelter, heating, ready-to-eat meals, and other non-food items.

Anticipated needs include:

  • Winterization items such as blankets and heating
  • Hot meals
  • Non-food items, such as hygiene products and clothing
  • Cash assistance

Bashem Shaher, a staff member on the ground, said: "This is the worst situation I have seen for a long time. They are still pulling people and bodies from the collapsed buildings, so we know the numbers of casualties will increase. Over 500 buildings have collapsed in Gazientep.”

HelpAge Canada is committed to ensuring the needs of older and vulnerable people are not overlooked in the aftermath of Türkiye and Syria’s devastating earthquake. Donate today to help us bring vital supplies to those in need.

“The freezing temperatures and already harsh conditions mean that utmost urgency must be given to the response to this earthquake.” -- Samuel Wood, HelpAge International’s Head of Inclusive Humanitarian Action
