Sudan in Crisis: Together, let's help refugees in Chad!

The crisis that has erupted between government forces and the Rapid Intervention Force in Sudan since April 2023 has led to the displacement of over 500,000 Sudanese refugees in eastern Chad. The needs identified are enormous (food assistance, shelter, protection, etc.). This wave comes on top of an initial wave of 407,000 Sudanese refugees who have settled in the east since 2003, bringing the total to over 900,000.

In Ethiopia, South Sudan, Chad and East Africa in general, the pressure is immense and humanitarian aid insufficient. The reality of emergency situations dictates that it is a priority to ensure that the humanitarian response takes into account people with disabilities and offers aid adapted to their needs. These vulnerable populations can easily find themselves excluded from access to essential goods and services.

From the outset of the 2023 crisis, Humanity & Inclusion has carried out several assessments in order to respond to the crying needs of this crisis. On site, our organization deploys activities in several fields : medical aid (functional rehabilitation), mental health (psychological support), inclusive humanitarian action, and the logistics of aid deployment (transport, storage and distribution of humanitarian aid). Finally, HI is also involved in the management of refugee and displaced persons camps, and participates in voluntary repatriation operations.

This project aims to help :

  • 700 people in health and rehabilitation activities
  • 500 people through mental health and psychological support activities.

Some examples of project activities:

  • Providing early rehabilitation services for injured people (including the provision of technical aids, education of the beneficiary and his/her carer) in hospital.
  • Provide outpatient rehabilitation services and follow-up for discharged patients
  • Provide psychological first aid (PFA) in hospitals and camps
  • Provide Mental Health and Psychological Support (MHPSS) awareness sessions
  • Set up therapeutic discussion groups.

To date, the project has enabled 411 Sudanese refugees to undergo early rehabilitation and 451 Sudanese refugees to receive psychological first aid.
