Children with autism often feel isolated. At Hinchinbrook, they make close connections with the animals, who are non-judgemental.
The Hinchinbrook Farm Society is a non-profit organization whose prime objective is to provide a therapeutic horse back riding program and other outdoor recreational activities to support the physical, mental and emotional well-being of persons with disabilities. Its main clients are families with autism.
These children and young adults often are excluded from recreation that is focussed on the neuro-typical children in our schools and organizations. The facility offers therapeutic riding, horse drawn carriages (for those with disabilities that preclude riding), and many play areas with activities such as trampoline, swimming, hiking and exploring nature. The aim is to provide sensory experiences in a controlled environment to help the individuals process stimuli. Trained volunteers (from a pool of about 40) are assigned to each person in the program.
