One survivor said, “I was so scared. There was always someone watching and I didn’t know what would happen if they caught me. I ran right through the crowd of men waiting to get in, and I didn’t look back.” (Kiss Radio, 2018) A man she thought she could trust drove her to a motel down the road but she soon discovered that her rescuer was no fairy-tale knight in shining armour—and that her ordeal was only just beginning.
For many years the realities of exploitation have been hidden or unknown in Canada. A common belief is that sex trafficking and exploitation is something that only happens in third world countries. The truth is, Canada has a serious issue. 93% of sex trafficking in Canada involves our own Canadian citizens, with an over-representation of Indigenous women and girls. Only 1 % of victims are ever rescued.
Hope Restored Canada (HRC) believes that all humanity is inherently valued and worthy of respect and dignity. Our vision is to create a world where humanity is renewed and restored in healthy relationships. We believe this is possible by eradicating sexual exploitation through the H.O.P.E. model: Holistic Restoration, Outreach, Partnerships, and Education.
Together with our members, volunteers and partners, HRC reaches out to those who are or have been in the sex industry. HRC offers caring relationship, assistance in life transition, and supports to walk through recovery and reintegration. Education is a powerful prevention strategy. HRC educates service providers and the general public on root causes, prevention strategies, and how to recognize the signs of exploitation.
The need is great! Saskatchewan has identified many gaps in supports for those who have experienced sex trafficking/exploitation. To create sustainable solutions, please consider supporting our life-changing programs in Saskatchewan.
Together we can change the ending for those impacted by the devastating crime of sex trafficking.
