Hornby Island Athletic Association

about

Hornby Island Athletic Association - fondly known to members as Joe King Park - is a non-profit society operating a variety of recreation and social activities.  Located in central Hornby Island, just off Vancouver Island BC, the society was founded in 1985, when volunteers obtained a lease from crown land and built a ballfield.  The name, Joe King came about when one of the early volunteers was told they were going to build a ballfield and replied "Are you joking?"  and indeed We are all Joe King.A cabin, donated to be the clubhouse, was moved from Whaling Station Bay and is now the venue for musical events, weddings, celebrations of life, meetings, movies, classes and workshops.  There is now a multi-purpose court, used for tennis, basketball, road hockey and pickleball; a disc-golf course; and a pump track, and a small fitness room. HIAA operates the only public showers, washrooms and laundry facility on the island. HIAA Is the Y or Recreation Centre for the island, offering activities and services that promote physical health and wellbeing for community members and visitors. HIAA works closely with many partner groups, including the Eagles Ball Team, HI Recreation and HI Education Society which offers a meal, by donation, 3 days/week and maintains the community Food Bank.  The HI Community Radio Station broadcasts from its building on the HIAA lease. Recently, HIAA acted as a warming centre during the Extreme Weather Incident and will develop this role with assistance from Comox Valley Regional District Emergency Management, HI Fire Rescue and local Emergency Preparedness volunteers.  HIAA received a Community Wellness grant to pilot having a daily drop-in space - Joe's Cafe - during the winter months when no other public spaces or restaurants are open. In 2022, HIAA received a Coop Community Spaces grant of $85,000 to upgrade the ballfield and clubhouse, including a new roof and much needed improvements to the wiring, insulation and accessibility.  Additional funds are needed for septic and electrical upgrades and to allow a generator which is essential for an emergency centre.
