HAVEN FOR ECOLOGY SOCIETY

about

As of January 2026 we have changed our name to HAVEN FOR ECOLOGY but we're still the same crew saving wild places for wild things and speaking up for nature.

Haven for Ecology (formerly the Valhalla Foundation for Ecology) is a registered charity and an ecological-conservation land trust. Your support helps us restore and steward nature sanctuaries to protect endangered species.

We have a beautiful new website, please check it out: www.havenecology.org

Here is some of our work:

  • - Snk'mip Marsh Sanctuary: We acquired, restored and steward this very rare forested-wetland in the Slocan Valley region of BC.
  • - Working in collaboration with local Indigenous partners we completed a massive, multi-year restoration project at Snk'mip which is documented in our film Snk'mip Dig Deeper (co-produced with the Autonomous Sinixt and co-directed by Sinixt Matriarch Marilyn James).
  • - To learn more about this international-award-winning film and to see our exciting trailer, check out our Snk'mip Dig Deeper website: https://www.digdeeperfilm.ca/
  • - The Snk'mip sanctuary is open to the public for the quiet appreciation of nature and we frequently host environmental-education school groups there.
  • - We steward a sizeable nature preserve in BC’s Chilcotin region: the Jaŝ Chinook Salmon Nature Sanctuary. This sanctuary contains grasslands, wetlands, and salmon-spawning habitat that support  wolves, grizzly and black bears, wild horses, and many species at risk.
  • - In partnership with another BC land trust we raised the funds to purchase 160 acres of lake-shore land along Slocan Lake in the Kootenay region of BC. This land, previously a private in-holding parcel within the boundaries of Valhalla Provincial Park, was threatened by waterfront development. Dubbed the “Valhalla Mile” for its mile of lake frontage on Slocan Lake, this property was acquired and subsequently donated to BC Parks with a strong conservation covenant.
  • - The Valhalla Mile is now part of Valhalla Provincial Park: still wild and undeveloped... still there for all to enjoy.
  • - We partnered with BC Parks to purchase and extinguish a trap-line on the east side of Goat Range Provincial Park and establish the area as a permanent fur-bearer reserve.
  • - We steward a waterfront beach area in Silverton, BC called “Colleen’s Beach Park” to honour the memory of renowned environmental activist and a founding director of our organization, Colleen McCrory, who lived nearby.
  • - We operate in the province of BC, acquiring and stewarding ecologically precious wildlife habitat. We fill a regional niche not covered by larger, national-scale land trusts.
  • - Our focus is ecological land conservation and restoration: saving wild places for wild things.
