The Stephen Lewis Foundation was created with the express purpose of putting money directly in the hands of community-based organizations working on the frontlines of the AIDS pandemic in Africa.
We exist to meaningfully collaborate on this important work, and to support the processes by which grassroots groups share ideas, strategize for change, and build unified networks across the African continent. With enough resources, they are on the precipice of creating lasting change.
About SLF STEPHEN LEWIS FOUNDATION
Since 2003, the Stephen Lewis Foundation has funded over 1700 initiatives, partnering with more than 325 community-based grassroots organizations in the 15 African countries hardest hit by the HIV & AIDS pandemic, including Botswana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. We also work with a number of regional initiatives.
These grassroots groups are a lifeline for their communities. They provide education and counselling about HIV prevention, care and treatment; distribute food, medication and other necessities; reach into the homes of the sick and vulnerable through holistic home-based care; help children orphaned by AIDS and other vulnerable children gain access to education and cope with their grief through music and art therapy; and support grandmothers, who are overwhelmingly the caregivers for their orphaned grandchildren.
