Our Mission

Hope in Shadows Society (also known as Megaphone) is a charitable organization based in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. Megaphone's mission is to: change the story on poverty by promoting social equity, amplifying marginalized voices, and creating meaningful work.

We support over 150 Megaphone vendors and storytellers impacted by poverty, inadequate housing, homelessness, substance use and other marginalizing barriers by providing income-earning and self-determined creative opportunities. 

Megaphone vendors sell Megaphone publications like our monthly Megaphone magazine, annual literary anthology Voices of the Street and the Hope in Shadows calendar. Megaphone vending is a low-barrier employment opportunity that allows vendors to sell when and where they want in Vancouver and Victoria. 

All of our publications feature contributions of poetry, prose, photography and community journalism by Megaphone vendors and storytellers, allowing for marginalized voices to be amplified and challenge the harmful stigma mainstream media often carries.
