IPBO is a conservation group that monitors birds that lives & migrate through the Greater Ottawa Area
Our Mission
Our programs include weekly bird banding, migration monitoring, and breeding bird monitoring, Volunteers visit the station every week to feed and band local birds, and care for bird boxes and Osprey nesting platforms. In Spring we run volunteer training days, to prepare for our flagship Spring Migration Monitoring Program. During this six-week program volunteers cooperate to monitor daily migration activity. Data from this program contributes to the Canadian Migration Monitoring Network. In summer, as well as monitoring breeding birds IPBO, we band Purple Martin chicks at a local park. This is a big attraction for families, and enables us to teach children and parents about local birds and bird banding. Northern Saw-whet owl banding in fall, is our most popular program, as volunteers and the public come to help study these enigmatic migratory owls.
All our volunteers contribute to the success of IPBO, but we rely especially on our seven licensed bird banders. These dedicated volunteers have years of experience handling birds and training volunteers, and our vital to the continued existence of IPBO.
