IGN is a nonprofit NGO leading the global fight to eliminate brain damage due to iodine deficiency, so that children can learn and thrive.
IGN is a small Canadian NGO with a big impact. We are the only organization with a sole objective to protect the world from iodine deficiency.
Insufficient iodine during pregnancy leads to lasting brain damage that can reduce a child's IQ by 8-10 points. Even moderate deficiency at school age can reduce IQ by 3-5 points, impacting children's ability to learn well in school and earn well as adults.
The problem has never fully disappeared, and changing dietary patterns are causing deficiency to re-emerge, even in some of the world’s wealthiest countries.
Without our work, the global progress achieved over the past few decades could disappear. It would be a major loss to humanity to see this progress slip away when we know how to prevent it.
What are we doing to change this?
We work with governments, industry and other partners to make salt iodization programs as effective, efficient, equitable and sustainable as they can be. We provide strategic and technical assistance to support all aspects of programming. We develop or support research, from documenting the situation to finding improved program strategies.
IGN consists of a worldwide network of more than 100 National Coordinators, supervised by a group of Regional Coordinators, who are in turn guided by a small global core team and an Executive Board.
Because of our work, millions of children will learn better at school and earn better as adults. By tackling the problem of iodine deficiency, countries can also reduce health costs related to even mild effects of the problem.
