Jewish Child and Family Service is a charitable, non-profit, social service agency based in Winnipeg. Established in 1952, JCFS supports and assists individuals and families experiencing a myriad of personal and family issues. Assistance is provided by trained social workers and counsellors to individuals, couples, and families, children and adults, with aid which includes: emotional supports, clinical counselling, guidance, advocacy, and financial assistance. We provide supports across the lifespan and to all segments of our society.
Our excellent programming is delivered in the following areas:
- Counselling to individuals, families, and couples (adults, children and/or adolescents) of any religious background or affiliation. We also offer group therapy as needs present themselves. We currently offer a bereavement support group, anxiety support group, and groups for depression, and self-esteem in women. In the past, JCFS has delivered supportive groups for suicide bereavement, care-giving in Alzheimer’s, and a myriad of groups for newcomers.
- Provincially Mandated Child and Family Services, including a full range of voluntary family supports, protection, prevention, foster care, and adoption services.
- Older Adult Services – These programs deliver supportive services to seniors and their families, with sub-specialties for aging clients living with mental health issues, newcomer seniors, and specialized supports to Holocaust survivors. Our Older Adult Services staff also provide supports, consultation, education, and guidance to the family members of seniors in their roles as caregiver.
- Mental Health Services provide individual and group supportive services to adults living with mental health issues. We also provide supports to members of their families.
- Settlement and Integration - As an agency funded by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada, JCFS offers primary settlement and long-term integration supports and assistance to new immigrants (Settlement) and refugees (Resettlement). In particular, we are very proud of our work with Yazidi refugees.
- Substance Use and Addiction Recovery Supports use a co-occurring framework to provide counselling, case management, referral, spiritual recovery supports, educational programs, supports to family members, and supportive groups for Jews who are struggling with, and seeking recovery from substance use and addiction.
- Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care are provided in institutional settings (e.g. hospitals, personal care homes, and correctional institutions) by our ordained rabbi and/or trained spiritual care volunteers.
- Volunteer Program – Volunteers are an essential adjunct to all JCFS programs and serve to support to seniors with friendly visitors, daily check-in phone calls, grocery shopping, and accompanied transportation to appointments. We also provide mentors for children and youth, supports to help newcomers settle, and more.
- Community Education and Awareness – JCFS offers many opportunities for public education and awareness on many social issues including addiction, mental health issues, domestic violence, issues facing seniors, etc.
