Our Story
K9 Advocacy Manitoba was founded in 2015 by First Nations nurse Jasmine Colucci, who witnessed firsthand the urgent need for support in rural communities overwhelmed by the overpopulation of stray and unwanted dogs and cats. With limited local veterinary services and few resources available, animals are often left unvaccinated, unsterilized, and struggling to survive, a situation that also poses safety concerns for community members.
What began as a small rescue initiative has grown into a dedicated, volunteer-run organization serving communities across Manitoba. Our team includes intake coordinators, vetting and foster coordinators, transport leads, fundraising and finance volunteers, social media and shop teams, and an incredible network of fosters and drivers. Together with our supporters, we are able to help over 3,000 dogs and cats each year.
In many northern and remote communities, the lack of resources and regulations means stray animals often go without shelter, food, or medical care. Some seek refuge in local dumps, exposing them to disease, injury, and Manitoba’s extreme weather, from scorching summers to freezing winters. Common medical needs include treatment for lacerations, broken bones, parasites, parvovirus, Lyme disease, heartworm, kidney worms, and other life-threatening conditions.
Because we do not operate a shelter, we rely entirely on our foster homes to provide safe, loving care while animals await transport to our rescue partners across Canada. Every foster, volunteer, and donor plays a crucial role in saving lives.
K9 Advocacy Manitoba is 100% volunteer-run and receives no government funding.
Our work depends on the generosity of our community — from donations that cover vet bills, food, supplies, and shop rent, to fuel and travel costs for outreach missions. Every contribution, no matter the size, directly helps animals who would otherwise have no chance.
Thanks to our supporters, thousands of dogs and cats have been given a voice, a future, and a second chance at life. And while we celebrate every success story, the thought of losing even one more animal before it has the chance it deserves is what drives us forward. We remain committed to supporting northern communities, reducing overpopulation, and rescuing the animals who need us most, no matter the obstacles.
