The Kahnawà:ke Cultural Arts Center Capital Campaign is a $16 million fundraising initiative to construct a new facility for the Kanien’kehá:ka Onkwawén:na Raotitióhkwa Language and Cultural Center (KORLCC), Turtle Island Theatre, and a Tourism Visitors Center.
This project is the result of a community partnership between KORLCC, Turtle Island Theatre, Kahnawà:ke Tourism, and the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK).
Constrained by an outgrown and deteriorating building, KORLCC recognized the need for a new home base but lacked the resources to build independently. With strong community support, they partnered with the MCK and Turtle Island Theatre to begin planning the construction of a large-scale, multi-purpose building and auditorium that will serve as a welcoming community hub for all.
The site, located just 10 minutes from downtown Montréal and easily accessible via Highway 30, will host a 4,800-square-meter facility on three acres of land bordering Highway 132. Sustainable technologies will be integrated throughout the building’s design.
Every tree removed during construction will be replaced, and wherever possible, removed wood will be repurposed for building finishes, furnishings, or as raw material for traditional crafts and artifacts.
The architecture of the Cultural Arts Center will harmonize with the surrounding landscape, with materials carefully chosen to reflect a connection with nature. Located adjacent to Kahnawà:ke Survival School, the new facility will allow for expanded programs and workshops that enhance the curriculum and provide students with volunteer opportunities. Special attention will be given to preserving the delicate natural balance of the surrounding ecosystem.
