King Edward Choir
Founded in 1952 by Jean Dobson, Barrie's King Edward Choir began as a ladies' choir, named after the Allandale school in which they practised. Directors over the years have included Charles Woodrow, Morley Calvert, Barbara McCann, Floydd Ricketts, and Oliver Balaburski. Today it is a group of 40 dedicated musicians encompassing all voices, under the leadership of Artistic Director, Leanne Edwards.
The choir strives to present a repertoire that is broad, engaging, and often challenging, to both chorister and audience; recent years have seen performances of works by Vaughan Williams, Orff, Nathaniel Dett, Mozart, Rossini, Ramírez, Britten, Bernstein, Fauré and Rutter, with offerings of Renaissance motets, Spirituals, folk songs, show tunes and contemporary Canadian works. King Edward Choir frequently collaborates with other artists and groups, and enjoys community sing-outs and outreach activities. The choir offers a mentorship program for students.
Rehearsals for KEC’s performances take place Monday nights. Open auditions occur each September, but interested singers are welcome to get in touch any time. Visit kingedwardchoir.ca for more about the choir.
