To be the organization in our community that celebrates the power of the written word by connecting writers and readers in conversations that inspire, engage and change our worldview.
To foster the artistic development of individual writers, promote literary expression and develop an audience for the literary arts.
About Our Charity
Kingston WritersFest is a four-day readers' and writers' festival featuring more than 60 top Canadian and international authors in 45 events – readings, onstage conversations, performances, and Writers Studio master classes for emerging and established writers. Among our author alumni are Nobel Prize winner J.M. Coetzee, Paul Auster, Annie Proulx, David Mitchell, Joyce Carol Oates, Margaret Atwood, Joseph Boyden, Roméo Dallaire, Jane Urquhart, Anita Rau Badami, Richard Gwyn, and Lawrence Martin.
We promote literacy in the schools through a TeensWrite! contest; Festival Field Trips, which bring high-school students to special youth events; and Authors@School, which takes writers into elementary schools. We collaborate with Queen’s University and numerous local arts partners, and offer all students free rush seats to onstage events.
What People Are Saying
"What a lovely and brilliant idea... We hear so much in this business about the peripheral importance of the arts in the world; I'm always surprised and moved to find out how dreadfully wrongheaded that idea is, for so many people. Please extend my gratitude ..."
— Author Steven Price (on our Author Patron program)
"Thank you so much for this, it is beautiful, and I’m very honoured that my visit has been helped so much by the program...Please pass on my sincere thanks and my love to them, and I’m so looking forward to seeing everyone in Kingston next month. "
— Author Madeleine Thien (on the Author Patron program)
"The excitement from Kingston WritersFest returned with the students... to enhance their reading and learning. Students and staff alike benefitted from the experience and are grateful that this festival draws in talented authors and provides... such an intimate experience of the literary process. "
