Since 1991, L'Ancre des Jeunes (ADJ) has worked in Montreal's South-West -- where the drop-out rate of 40% is among the city's highest -- to encourage young people to stay in school, or to return to school if they've already abandoned their studies. To accomplish its mission, ADJ offers personalized academic, social and pyschological support and counseling to at-risk youth.

ADJ helps students in grades 5 through 11 who seem to lack the motivation necessary for school success, or who have already dropped out or appear likely to do so. ADJ offers these young people a structured environment and counseling adapted to individual needs, thus enabling them to increase their self-esteem, prioritize their education and reintegrate socially and academically.

ADJ supports students in addressing their personal and educational challenges, convinced that, with the aid of ADJ's professional staff, each young person is capable of overcoming key obstacles and changing his or her situation.

The ADJ's holistic approach is tried and tested: more than 90% of participants return to school and 93% of them pursue their studies the following year.  

To serve even more young people, ADJ has launched a $2.5 million major gifts campaign with the goal of creating additional centers in Montreal's boroughs. ADJ will also develop and distribute a toolbox which will permit other communities to establish their own school perseverance programs based on the ADJ model.
