What is the mandate of the Association for Handicapped Persons of East Kamouraska?
Also known as APHK, the association is a not-for-profit organization which was founded on February 1, 1984. The Board of directors is made of nine persons. The association currently has over 180 members; 80 of them are persons with a handicap. The mission of the organization is to promote and defend the rights of handicapped people and their families and to facilitate their social integration at all levels. Since its foundation, the APHK has been actively involved in its community to foster an improved quality of life for people with a handicap.
APHK also set up the "Support and Social Integration" component; overseen by a specialized educator. This program is aimed at a group of disabled people who want to integrate into society, to get together to do activities of all kinds and receive training on subjects that affect them.
The APHK also set up in 1988 the Project Challenge which aims to provide respite to people living with a child or adolescent with physical or intellectual limitations. Offered during the summer period, the Challenge Project allows its young participants to take part in diversified activities designed according to their needs and interests. This project also allows students to put into practice the techniques learned during their studies.
In 2010, the organization erected a building of 10 apartments adapted for disabled people and services are provided 24/7.
In 2018, the Association revitalized, embellished and adapted a building located on a major artery in Ville de Saint-Pascal. The building shelters the offices of the association, workshops for people with disabilities, a shop selling the items made in these workshops as well as a café. In 2020, the association initiated a weekend respite project.
APHK organizes fundraising activities throughout the year.
Since March 14, 2020, all of these activities have been postponed due to COVID-19 and the APHK is currently preparing a recovery plan adapted to health guidelines.
