Civic sponsorship originated in the United States, initiated in the 1960s by Dr. Wolf Wolfensberger, a psychologist and scientific researcher at Syracuse University.
In Quebec, around 1970, a major deinstitutionalization process began in the mental health sector. During the same period, civic sponsorship appeared in the province and the rest of Canada.
The Centre de Parrainage Civique de Québec was incorporated on April 23, 1980. Initially, the Centre was created to respond to community needs, particularly those of individuals with intellectual disabilities.
Today, the Centre serves a broader clientele, including individuals facing mental health challenges or living with physical limitations. We are proud to be part of the Regroupement québécois du parrainage civique, bringing together civic sponsorship organizations from 10 regions across Quebec: Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Mauricie, Chaudière-Appalaches, Montérégie, Montreal, Laurentides, Bas-Saint-Laurent, Centre-du-Québec, Lanaudière, and the Capitale-Nationale.
