The Literacy Network of Durham Region support adult literacy programs and delivers bibliotherapy in the local community.
The Literacy Network of Durham Region (LiNDR) was incorporated as a charity in 1994 to help meet the literacy needs of the regional community. Its purpose is to support and promote literacy and basic skills services within the regional municipality of Durham. LiNDR supports a bibliotherapy initiative across Durham Region which provides guided reading groups to people experiencing social isolation.
Bibliotherapy is the use of reading materials (fiction, poetry, memoirs, etc.) to assist individuals in dealing with mental, physical, emotional, developmental, or social problems. Reading selections are used to create topic-related group sessions that address specific life problems and promote resilience (e.g. inspirational stories about overcoming addictions). It is a model that works particularly well to reduce social isolation. Each group is facilitated by a trained bibliotherapist" who selects relevant reading material to address the identified social isolation topic of the group and promotes growth and wellbeing through post-reading discussion.
