Giving Tuesday is the world’s largest generosity movement.
Whether it’s making someone smile, helping a stranger, or giving to those who need our help, every act of generosity counts, and everyone has something to give. At Literacy Unlimited, we give literacy.
Nearly half of adult Canadians, including those in the West Island, do not have sufficient literacy to participate fully in our community. Low literacy skills negatively impact all aspects of people's lives: family life, work, and in the community.
Low literacy also has a devastating result: shame. This shame makes people who need help with literacy feel alone and invisible. People with low literacy also develop clever ways of hiding their low literacy, making it harder to identify who needs help and keeping them invisible.
Literacy is more than just reading and writing. Literacy impacts every aspect of our lives. Living in a knowledge-based society, we need literacy.
Literacy Unlimited is here for people in our community raising literacy awareness and helping people with low literacy. We offer free one-on-one English literacy tutoring, community workshops, small-scale accessible libraries, and more. We provide our learners with the literacy skills they need to fully contribute and be visible in their personal and professional lives.
Working with a Literacy Unlimited tutor has a transformative effect on adults like Colette, a learner who used to feel shame about her inability to read, who said, "Now I have a soul, a face."
Our theme for this year is “visibility.” We will continue striving to make our learners, volunteers, and organization more visible in the community. We will give our learners the literacy skills they need to fully contribute and be visible in their personal and professional lives.
