The MacNab Hill Cemetery Society is a non-profit society with the objective to care for, preserve and maintain the MacNab Hill Cemetery located in Upper Malagash, Nova Scotia, Canada: A place of remembrance since 1803.
The cemetery was established by Alexander McNab (born at Suie, Glendochart, Perthshire, Scotland) who came to Upper Malagash with his brother James in approximately 1790.
There are more than 145 individual buriels in MacNab Hill Cemetery. The earliest with a surviving marker is Isabella McNab, b. 17 November, 1799 - d. 21 May, 1803, 2nd daughter of Alexander and Catherine (Waugh) McNab. The second oldest with a surviving marker is Isabella MacFarlane who died in 1806.
Many close relatives to Alexander McNab, descendants, neighbours and friends were buried in the cemetery. More than 30 family names are recorded on the stones, including Allen, Barclay, Browne, Canfield, Cunningham, Dewar, Faulkner, Glendenning, Gullon, MacDonald, MacFarlane, McIntosh, Morrison, Newcomb, Patton, Patriquin, Stewart, Thurgood, Trenholm, Tuttle, and Waugh. Many of these families have now moved away from this area.
The Society currently relies on annual donations, fund-raising, and volunteers to care for the cemetery. It is growing an investment fund to finance the care of the cemetery in the long term. At just under $15,000, the investment fund needs to grow to $30,000 to earn $1,000 per year from our investment fund in order to maintain this cemetery.
We are ready to receive charitable donations and issue receipts for income tax purposes. Please be as generous as you can.
