Madness Canada

about

Madness Canada / Folie Canada is a bilingual exhibit showcase, a research space, and an education hub, dedicated to showcasing mental health experiences and advocating for community driven approaches. We are a vibrant academic-community coalition of allies and people with lived/living experience of mental health. Our mission is to work collaboratively to create accessible and challenging education resources, provide thought-provoking displays, support innovative research, and cultivate community and social capital. Our vision is that people and organizations engaged in building equitable, inclusive mental health supports will use Madness Canada as a nationally recognized source of reliable information, experiential educational resources, and insights from a history that is both troubling and inspirational.

In 2023, Madness Canada / Folie Canada merged with Friends of the CAMH Archives (FoCA) under the Museum of Mental Health Services (Toronto) Inc. This merger allows both organizations to extend their shared mandates of preservation, education, and research in the field of Canadian mental health history and its legacies.

Our collective histories can be traced back to the support of archival and heritage programs at the Queen Street CAMH site, and collaborative work recognizing the legacy of Mad Pride within Canadian communities. Together under the umbrella of Madness Canada / Folie Canada, we are a non-profit that delivers mental health educational programming and dynamic, relevant research exhibits and resources.

Archival Research Awards Program

Supporting archival research since 2000 through our annual Awards' program is the our principal charitable activity.  Through an annual juried competition, we help to enable archives-based research projects in the history of psychiatry and other mental health services in Canada.
