Malaspina Choir

Registered Name: MALASPINA CHOIR SOCIETY

Business Number: 119029577RR0001

Malaspina Choir is a 60-member mixed-voice community choir. We have performed challenging, diverse repertoire since our founding in 1970, almost 50 years ago. Today, as before, we present choral masterpieces from Bach to Verdi and contemporary and lighter repertoire to the delight of Nanaimo, BC audiences. The choir  plays a role in Nanaimo’s civic and ceremonial life beginning with the opening of the Malaspina College (now Vancouver  Island University) in 1969, followed by a performance for Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip in 1983. We gave Nanaimo its official song for its 125th birthday (2006) and helped open the 2009 BC Seniors Games. To encourage younger musicians, we invited three local school choirs and band plus two VIU student ensembles to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday. Choir members come from the surrounding community and include students at Vancouver Island University. We offer opportunities to perform at our concerts to these and other students. Charitable donations help us reduce our membership fees and keep our concert ticket prices low even when we present concerts with professional soloists and musicians. In addition to the general fund that supports the choir and its activities, you may donate to the Member Bursary fund to directed toward singers needing assistance with choir fees and for choral development activities.
