MANITOBA ORGANIZATION FOR VICTIM ASSISTANCE INC.

about

Our Mission

MOVA was formed at the suggestion of the Manitoba Department of Justice in 2000 in conjunction with the passage of Manitoba’s Victims Bill of Rights (VBR). Our mandate is to support family survivors of homicide victims, help increase public awareness of victims’ rights and to work with government to enhance and expand legislation, policies and programs that serve family survivors of homicide victims. MOVA is made up of a very dedicated group of volunteers, an 8 member volunteer Board of Directors comprised of both homicide victims and other invested members of the public whose own special skill sets benefit the work of the organization. Some of our board members are representative of the Aboriginal and Métis communities. Some of our board members are also personally affected by homicide, having lost a close family member to murder, therefore bringing with them the unique and profound experience that accompanies the tragedy of murder. It is this close and personal connection to our victims that forms the bonds and trust that we share with them. It is this very fact which makes our services so profoundly important in the lives of homicide survivors. Our primary goal has always been to assist victims in the healing process in what is a very complicated grief. Our personal support is available from the moment of the crime until long after any court proceedings have concluded, sometimes years after the fact. Funding assistance and donations are critical for the continuance of our programs and is vital to the well being and needs of the victims that we assist.
