The Merit Award Bursary Program provides bursaries to senior high school students in Toronto & Peel as an incentive to stay in school. We recognize those who demonstrate a commitment to their school work, extra curricular activities and communities.

Merit was started in 1996 by a group of Toronto residents who felt it was important to support and encourage high school students to stay in school.

We work with 96 high-needs schools in the Toronto District, Toronto Catholic District and Peel District School Boards. Merit is committed to empowering youth of all abilities to pursue advancement through education and to contribute to their communities.

Bursary awards are available for $500 for those returning to secondary school, and $1,000, $2,000 and 3 awards of $5,000 for those pursuing post-secondary education. In 2022, Merit distributed $326,500 and inspired 315 students to advance their education.

Merit also provides non-financial supports such as, mentorship programs, job skills workshops and networking events, as they progress through their post-secondary journey and beyond.

Help encourage and recognize these dedicated students so they may pursue their education. Inspire students who stay in school, recognize those who overcome challenges, and reward contributors to the community.

Many of the students that apply for the Merit Award are from diverse backgrounds and have endured considerable personal and financial hardships. 96% of students who receive a Merit Award proceed to the next year of school.
