Mikinduri Children of Hope

about

Mikinduri is a small, poor, remote village in Kenya, Africa. Mikinduri Children of Hope (MCOH) is a PEI based registered charity. Nearly 40,000 Kenyans have been helped since 2008 at our annual Mission trips, where Cdn professionals, completely at their own expense,  conduct Med, Dental and Vision clinics. Our mission as an organization is to help relieve the effects of poverty in Kenya, by working with local leaders, churches, government agencies, and our international partners in Mikinduri, to provide appropriate resources and support to assist the people to help themselves.

The people of Mikinduri have little opportunity for work, except as laborers on small farms. Like most African countries, Kenya is plagued with the effects of disease and insufficient food. Some of the children cannot afford school fees, which prevents then from getting an education. Their future is bleak. This district of kind, hard working, gentle people desperately need outside help.

"The Community Based Health Care (CBHR) project was started 6 years ago, by a team of Cdn Health Professionals (Physicians, Nurses and Pharmacists) On the basis of 3 assessment clinics it was noted that the levels of disability (cerebral palsy, limb deformities, spina bifida and amputations) was excessive even by Kenyan standards. In partnership with the Association of Physically Disabled Kenyans (APDK), Kenya Ministry of Health and the Mikinduri Community, Phase One of the CBHC Project, with financing from Canada, was the construction, staffing and resourcing of the Mikinduri Rehabilitation Centre. Work is continuing to increase services for Persons with Disabilities through further partnerships: Empower and Enabling Kenyans to help Kenyans." Phase Two which is the establishment of outreach clinics is now underway.

School feeding programs- Many children arrive at schools in a state of extreme hunger, such that they are not able to concentrate on the school work, thus they end up dropping out early. In partnership with the guardians and parents, as well as our great Mikinduri staff, five feeding programs are now in operation. In the past 12months almost 1,000,000 meals have been served. In 2016, two  more schools will added to our list.

School building- Many schools are in dire need of replacement, so starting in 2012, we have financed the cost of two new schools, as well as desks and other resource materials. Our education program also provides treatment for worms and the removal of hook worms(jiggers) from students feet, which if not treated is very debilitating.

Scholarship program- Mikinduri students crave to finish school. It is seen as the only way out of dire poverty. Ironically, it is the dire poverty that prevents them from finishing secondary school and beyond. In response, we initiated our scholarship program, which pays for boarding school for deserving students. Students must maintain minimum standards in order to continue to receive the support.
