Mission Urbaine

about

Description

Mission Urbaine was created in 1999 by a group of people who wanted young adults to be joined and supported in their culture, in this period of their lives and in today's society.

Since then, a social worker and another person employed by Mission Urbaine have visited the restaurants, bars, billiard halls and cafes located near the University and the three nearby colleges  Ste-Foy, Garneau and St Lawrence. A total of almost 50000 young people study in this area.

Currently 35 sites are visited regularly and the demand for meetings with our workers continues to increase because of the disarray of young people accentuated by suicide, drug addiction and the new gambling problem but also because of new situations such as sexual assault on the campus of Laval University and the attack on the Grand Mosque.

Objectives of the organization: (These objectives have not changed since the foundation)

  1. A) Accompany young adults and be present in their quest for meaning
  2. B) Connect young adults in difficulty with professional resources concerning drug abuse, suicide, gambling, sexual orientation, etc.

Current activities to achieve goals

Two people travel the territory (bounded by the streets Myrand, Laurier, Duplessis and Versant-Nord) with a street worker approach inspired by a christian attitudes.

These meetings allow some young people to open up and find meaning in their daily lives.

Operation

A Board of Directors made up of 10 volunteers stays on target for Mission Urbaine. The Board is responsible for orientation, project promotion and supervision of field work.

Funding

Our organization is supported primarily by donations from individuals who believe in our mission to young adults in search of meaning.
