A non-profit organization managed by volunteers who maintain the park and organize programs for school children and the public.
The Morrell Nature Sanctuary is a 111 hectare teaching forest that has a lake, a pond and 12 km of hiking trails including the wheelchair accessible Yew Loop. It is not a city park but private property owned by Nature Trust of BC and leased by the Morrell Sanctuary Society for Environmental Education. The Nature Sanctuary is open to the general public all year for anyone who wants to go for a hike. Our volunteers maintain all the trails and buildings on the site. Our main focus is education; all the Nature Interpreters are volunteers. We offer on-site programs for school groups, seniors and special interest groups. We currently offer 12 programs, some of which are entitled “Forest Detectives”, “Webbed Wanderers”, “Meet a Tree” and “Mother Nature’s Riches”. We have a summer day camp for children aged 5 to 9 and a junior leader program for returning campers aged 10 to 12. In 2019 we had over 1300 elementary school children visit the Nature Sanctuary to learn about nature. Many of Nanaimo’s children met their first tadpole or millipede while on a field trip to Morrell Nature Sanctuary.
We have several types of memberships which helps us pay for supplies needed for the up-keep of our beautiful sanctuary:
- Individual $15.00
- Family $25.00
- Group $50.00
- Organization $100.00
- Life-Individual $180.00
- Life-Family $300.00
