The Musée de la mémoire vivante is a unique museum in Canada, entirely dedicated to the individual, their knowledge, skills, life stories, and their transmission. It collects, preserves, and showcases these testimonies—primarily oral—to safeguard both individual and collective memory for present and future generations.

A Living and Accessible Space

Located in the reconstructed seigneurial manor of Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, the Museum follows an ethnological approach to document human experiences. The collected stories, from across Canada and beyond, enrich its exhibitions and are made accessible for educational, social, or cultural purposes.

The Museum invites the public to actively contribute by sharing testimonies or lending meaningful objects. Each contribution enhances a growing collection that reflects the diversity of life paths and traditions. In this way, everyday stories become part of the broader historical narrative.

The Pierre-Chouinard Memory Garden and the arboretum extend the Museum’s mission outdoors. This landscaped area offers a sensory and contemplative experience, where plants evoke memories, traditions, and cultural practices. Visitors, nature lovers, birdwatchers, and photographers are invited to reconnect with their own stories and those of others. The plants and trees form a living collection, constantly evolving, celebrating the richness of natural and cultural heritage while providing a privileged space for observation and inspiration.
