Context
Surgical care is a critical yet often overlooked component of health systems. Globally, an estimated 5 billion people lack access to safe, affordable surgical and anaesthesia care.
The Lancet Commission on Global Surgery (2015) and the World Health Organization’s Resolution WHA 68.15 both called for strengthening emergency and essential surgical care and anaesthesia as part of universal health coverage.
In particular, Maternal Health, Children’s Surgery, Trauma Surgery, and Cancer Surgery represent four clinical “entry points” with the highest need and the greatest potential for rapid, meaningful improvement.
Goals
To accelerate and expand access to surgical, obstetric, and anaesthesia care so that everyone, everywhere can receive safe, high-quality, timely, and affordable surgical services.
