Context
The full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 has caused massive civilian casualties and the destruction of civilian infrastructure (UNHCR). This violence has displaced millions, with UNHCR estimating there are 3,340,140 internally displaced people (IDPs) in Ukraine as of July 2025 (UNHCR) in addition to more than 5 million refugees abroad.
While Ukraine is receiving significant military and humanitarian aid, gaps remain at the ground level. Ukrainian civil society, at the level of individual, family, and community, are filling these gaps. Regular people are sourcing, making, buying then shipping through the post or hand-delivering everything defenders and frontline communities need to stay alive, heal and rehabilitate after injury. The scale and efficacy of Ukrainian civil society in supporting Ukraine’s defence and humanitarian response have been widely recognised (Foreign Affairs, UNWomen). These networks require financial, logistical and material support to continue to have an impact.
Myriad Canada is carrying out a project with Ryan Grant Little, founder of CanadaHelps, who works with charitable networks in Europe and Ukraine to fill gaps identified by Ukrainians in Ukraine, as efficiently as possible. Through various networks, a surplus of goods and equipment ready for donation to Ukraine have been identified yet remain stuck in Europe due to a lack of people and organisations willing to cover shipping costs. By facilitating the shipment of these humanitarian and medical items between vetted charitable partners, more Ukrainians can be equipped with what they need to respond and rebuild
Goals
- Through the facilitation of at least 10 shipments of medical and humanitarian equipment and supplies, this project seeks to:
- Provide frontline communities with access to humanitarian and rehabilitation services.
- Facilitate the delivery of medical and humanitarian aid valued at least 25x the relative costs of shipping.
- Expand the network of charitable partners to facilitate more effective and efficient support of Ukraine’s response and rebuilding.
