Myanmar’s decades-long civil war, exacerbated by the 2021 military coup, has displaced millions, forcing over 500,000 refugees into the Thai-Myanmar border region. This area is near the “Golden Triangle,” the world’s largest illicit drug-producing region. Refugee communities face trauma and addiction.
Goals
To provide comprehensive addiction training, treatment, and prevention education in the refugee camps along the Thai border.
Activities
Using a culturally sensitive, community-based approach, to goal is to provide:
- Treatment: intensive, 3-month residential programs focused on detox, therapy, and relapse prevention;
- Prevention education: community-wide workshops aimed at reducing stigma and preventing substance abuse;
- Home visits: post-treatment support for clients and their families to ensure sustained recovery.
