ABOUT NISHNAWBE ASKI NATION
Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) is a political advocacy organization that represents 49 First Nations communities and advocates on behalf of its member communities on issues of importance with Treaty partners - the Governments of Canada and Ontario.
NAN was established in 1973 and was originally known as Grand Council Treaty No. 9 until 1983. The NAN territory encompasses James Bay Treaty No. 9 and the Ontario portion of Treaty No. 5, a landmass covering two-thirds of the Province of Ontario. The total population is approximately 45,000 people who traditionally speak Cree, Algonquin, Oji-Cree, and Ojibway.
