Wawatay Communications Society serves the communication needs of First Nations people and the communities of Nishnawbe Aski Nation and does this through several ways, including the iconic Wawatay Radio Network. What is unique about Wawatay is how it has strived to preserve and enhance the languages and cultures of the First Nations people in northern Ontario and connected people to the world in their language whether that is Ojibway, Cree or Oji-Cree.
Wawatay has been a vital communications system in northern Ontario, reaching many radio listeners and newspaper readers for decades, as envisioned by its founders. However, with the changing communications landscape, Wawatay has experienced financial hardship and is facing the possibility of being shut down.
As a fundraising effort, on December 12, 2024, NAN will host a 12-hour radiothon, on the Wawatay Radio Network.
With your help, we can save Wawatay!
