At Nanaimo Foodshare Society, many of our participants and community partners are a part of the diverse ability community. Our Food Fun and Advocacy and Five Acre Film highlight how our programs partner with the diverse ability community to build food skills, increase access to healthy food, and advocate for a food system that is inclusive. Now Foodshare wants to make our building accessible, so we can walk (and roll!) our talk and increase our ability to have an accessible building for accessible food.
The Foodshare building has two floors and access to the kitchen and washroom is only accessible through the use of stairways. This severely restricts access for participants with mobility challenges to join the Everyone at the Table (EAT), Cultivating Abilities, Kids Get Cooking, and Foodshare Film Group programs.
To solve these issues, Nanaimo Foodshare is seeking to build an accessibility ramp at the front, widen doorways to improve access to the upper floors, and add an accessible washroom. The total cost for this work is approximately $25,000. Nanaimo Foodshare Society will match all donations up to a grand total of $11,000 for this project. Individuals and organizations who donate $500 or more will be recognized on a plaque placed along the accessibility ramp, after renovations are complete.
Donate today - and let's make food security accessible and inclusive to all.
