Nature United

about

Nature United is committed to reimagining conservation across Canada. We approach conservation in bold and collaborative ways, delivering lasting results for people, nature and economies. Our vision is a sustainable Canada where nature is the foundation of human well-being, prosperity and opportunity for future generations.

We have helped set the stage for remarkable conservation and climate gains across Canada—including:

- The implementation of Ecosystem-Based Management across the central and north coast including, The Great Bear Rainforest and Haida Gwaii, which led to conservation and sustainable management across 19 million acres. Alongside this, The Nature Conservancy made a $39 million contribution to a conservation endowment and supported the creation of Coast Funds. These funds are part of a $60 million endowment that supports Indigenous stewardship throughout the region and provides capacity for First Nations to co-manage the area’s resources alongside the provincial government.

- The establishment of the 6.5-million-acre Thaidene Nëné Indigenous Protected Area, which is co-governed by Indigenous, federal and territorial governments, setting a new precedent for conservation in Canada and beyond. Alongside this, and in partnership with the Łutsël K’é Dene First Nation, we raised $15 million to establish a $30 million fund, which is currently supporting the Łutsël K’é Dene’s management of the protected area.

- The publication of “Natural Climate Solutions for Canada”, which has been leveraged to secure significant federal commitments to Natural Climate Solutions—including Canada’s first Emissions Reductions Plan. This work also contributed to the establishment of the $5 billion Natural Climate Solutions Fund, which includes the Agricultural Climate Solutions Program.

- Supporting the creation of Canadian Alliance for Net-Zero Agri-food (CANZA), which has a goal of reducing 150 Mt of greenhouse gas emissions from Canada’s agri-food sector and participating in the Government of Canada’s Sustainable Agriculture Strategy Advisory Committee, a collaboration that primarily includes producer associations and agri-food businesses.

Nature United has a proven track record of building diverse partnerships to achieve large-scale and enduring impacts. Because of our longstanding experience in Canada—and around the world through our affiliation with The Nature Conservancy (nature.org)—Nature United is recognized as a trustworthy collaborator. We work strategically at the intersection of Natural Climate Solutions and Indigenous-led conservation to ensure resilient communities and ecosystems. This approach means that Indigenous Peoples and local communities lead and define the visions for their territories and communities, choosing partners like Nature United to advance shared goals and priorities.

Our work at Nature United is informed by the best global science and supported by the leadership of the world’s most effective conservation organization. Headquartered in Toronto, Nature United has field staff located across the country. We support Indigenous leadership, sustainable economic development and large-scale conservation efforts in British Columbia (BC), the Northwest Territories and Boreal Manitoba. We are focused on strengthening the adoption of regenerative agriculture practices and nature-positive corporate collaboration in the Canadian Prairies and Ontario Great Lakes region. We work at a national scale to advance Natural Climate Solutions and Indigenous-led conservation.
