NEA Memorial Gardens Inc. (NEA MGI)
NEA MGI is a registered charity and a not-for-profit organization owned by the residents and managed by a volunteer Board of Directors..
NEA MGI Is a not-for-profit organization, was officially incorporated in Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) in November 2022. Following that, we obtained our CRA Federal Charitable Status in January 2023. Our responsibilities expanded when we assumed the administration of the cemeteries in Pouch Cove and Flatrock in June 2023. As of November 2023, the ownership of these cemeteries now rests with the community itself
The Primary Purpose
The NEA Memorial Gardens Inc. was established with a primary purpose: to manage and oversee the cemeteries in Pouch Cove (St. Agnes) and Flatrock (Flatrock Memorial Gardens), ultimately benefiting the local communities and residents.
Unfortunately, for many years, neglect had taken its toll on our cemetery and its plots, as the previous owner failed to provide the necessary attention.
However, as proud residents of our Towns, both Pouch Cand and Flatrock, we have now taken ownership of both St. Agnes Cemetery and Flatrock Memorial Gardens (FMG). Our commitment is to ensure accessibility for all and to meticulously care for the plots, particularly those of our honored Veterans.
By doing so, we aim to create a space that everyone can take pride in.
Flatrock Memorial Gardens
FMG with its long-term goal of achieving full Perpetual Care, faces a significant challenge at present. Numerous plots lie in complete disrepair, some of which belong to our honored veterans, and unfortunately, in some cases, there are no surviving family members to undertake the necessary repairs, upkeep, or maintenance. Additionally, the cemetery has limited accessibility to the public, and parking space is limited.
Our cemetery, FMG, holds a special place in everyone’s hearts—the final resting place of our loved ones, our veterans, and the very individuals who shaped Flatrock into what it is today. It is a repository of our collective history.
Last year, through modest repairs, we witnessed a renewed interest among family members in caring for their plots and taking pride in the resting places of their dear ones. Furthermore, our efforts to enhance accessibility throughout the cemetery significantly benefited those with mobility challenges. We have embarked on this journey, and together, we can continue to honor our community’s past and create a space that evokes pride and reverence.
The Need - The Renewal Project
Our ongoing funding requirements are crucial for addressing several essential tasks. These funds will enable us to carry out the removal of old structures, such as forms, concrete walls, and deteriorated railings, from the cemetery plots. Our ultimate objective is to comprehensively repair these plots by eliminating outdated elements, filling in any gaps, and adding topsoil and sod. This meticulous preparation ensures that these plots are ready for perpetual care in the future.
Moreover, this project serves as an inspiring example for other plot owners at Flatrock Memorial Gardens (FMG). By demonstrating that such restoration efforts are feasible, we hope to encourage more individuals to participate actively in maintaining their own plots. Perpetual care can indeed become a reality when the community comes together.
Veterans’ plots hold a special place in our collective hearts. When we revitalize a veterans’ plot, it has a profoundly positive impact on everyone, particularly our youth. It serves as a poignant reminder of the numerous veterans who have contributed to our community—not only those who made the ultimate sacrifice during wartime but also the many who served honorably.
Let us continue this vital work, honoring our past and ensuring that the Flatrock Memorial Gardens remain a place of reverence and pride.
Our Adopt a Plot Project
FMG Adopt A Plot program plays a vital role in our mission. It assigns dedicated volunteers to uncared-for plots—those where no family members remain or where elderly family members are unable to maintain them. Some of these plots hold special significance, as they belong to our honored veterans.
Our overarching goal is to transform these neglected plots into an acceptable condition, ensuring they are ready for perpetual care. Our committed volunteers are equipped with their own tools, but we require essential materials such as cleaning supplies (D2), paint, topsoil, and sods. In certain cases, a backhoe may be necessary to facilitate the restoration process.
The FMG Adopt A Plot program not only propels us toward our perpetual care objective but also rekindles pride within our community. It fosters connections—bridging the gap between youth and seniors—and reaffirms our collective commitment to preserving our cemetery’s legacy. Together, we honor the past and create a space that reflects our shared reverence.

Headstone Renewal Project
Within the hallowed grounds of St. Agnes Cemetery & Flatrock Memorial Gardens, time has etched its mark upon the stones that stand sentinel over our departed loved ones. Some, once resolute and upright, now bear the weight of years, their surfaces weathered and inscriptions fading. Among them, the memories of veterans echo—a silent tribute to their sacrifice.
Our mission is clear: restoration. We tread carefully, hands gloved in reverence, as we lift the sunken stones from their earthly embrace. Each one, a chapter in our shared history, deserves to be read anew. The words etched by grieving hands, the names whispered in sorrow—they must not fade into obscurity.
With unwavering dedication, we labor. The sunken stones are reset, their rightful heights reclaimed. It is a laborious task, a symphony of patience and persistence. But it is a task of profound significance—a bridge between past and present, a testament to our commitment.
And there, amidst the rows of time-worn markers, we encounter treasures. Heritage Style Headstones, guardians of memory, their elegance transcending decades. They bear witness to an era—the 1920s—when lives were etched in sepia tones, and grief flowed like a quiet river.
Among them, a rarity—a cast iron decorative cross, singular and ornate. Its curves tell stories of craftsmanship, of hands that molded metal into grace. Beside it, two handmade concrete headstones, their surfaces etched with care. Each stroke, a prayer for remembrance.
In this sacred endeavor, we honor not just the departed but also the living. For within these stones lie connections—between generations, between youth and age. Our progress may be slow, but it is purposeful. And as we breathe life into weathered letters, we weave a tapestry of continuity.
St. Agnes Cemetery and Flatrock Memorial Gardens, where time stands still and memories bloom, we pledge to preserve your legacy—one stone at a time.
Database Project
Our long-term endeavor involves meticulously documenting the lives that rest within the sacred grounds of both St. Agnes Cemetery and Flatrock Memorial Gardens. Here’s how we’re weaving their stories into the fabric of our community:
Data Collection and Organization:
We’ve painstakingly entered the names of all those at rest into a comprehensive database for Flatrock Memorial Gardens and have jusst started on St. Agnes Cemetery.
The cemeteries has been thoughtfully divided into distinct sections, each with its own unique character.
Every plot and grave now bears a specific identifier: Section (S), Plot (P), and Grave (G). For instance, S1 P1 G3 represents a specific resting place.
Online Accessibility:
Our primary goal is to make this invaluable information accessible online through a searchable database.
Imagine being able to explore the lives, connections, and legacies of those who shaped our community—all with a few clicks.
Honoring Each Life:
Our second goal of Flatrock Memorial Gardens is equally profound: to etch into history a brief biography for each of the 989 individuals interred here.
We’ve already embarked on the first phase, focusing on our 47 veterans. Approximately 30 biographies are already complete.
These narratives breathe life into the names etched on headstones, revealing their joys, struggles, and contributions.
Preserving Our Heritage:
Time is fleeting, and our existing seniors hold precious memories. We must capture this data before it slips away.
This project isn’t just about facts; it’s about preserving the heart and soul of our towns—Pouch Cove and Flatrock.
Through these stories, we honor our past, celebrate resilience, and ensure that no memory is lost to time.
Together, we weave a tapestry of remembrance—a testament to the lives that echo through generations.
