Whether its the magic of a movie with family, watching top notch performers or standing on stage, memories are made at the Roxy
Memories are made at the Roxy Theatre!
The Neepawa Theatre Centre (NTC) owns and operates the Roxy Theatre, a historic movie theatre and performance venue built in 1906 and renovated to its current style in 1940. NTC exists to promote, develop, nurture, preserve and improve the cultural heritage of Neepawa and district. This is done through the preservation of our historic theatre and its continued operation as an essential venue for arts, culture and entertainment.
The theatre is community owned and volunteer run. In addition to playing new released, we are the only theatre with a full stage in our area, we are an essential venue for arts, culture and entertainment for residents within a 75 km area. Our audience comes from a radius of 150 miles in each direction and in 2016, we welcomed 7,000 movie goers, in addition to numerous private rentals and rentals to organizations that hold public events.
Children and youth are the frequent beneficiaries of our rentals. Recent rentals with operations aimed at children and youth include: Neepawa Area Collegiate Institute (high school), Hazel M Kellington Elementary School, NAC TV (Local access TV station that hosted a televised talent night where about 1/3 the performers were youth), many birthday parties, Boy Scouts, Neepawa Chambe of Commerce’s annual free Santa Claus parade day movie, 4H Clubs, Manitoba Junior Hockey League, Touchwood Park (an organization helping those with mental and physical disabilities).
Volunteer support is a crucial part of the theatre’s operations and the community has been keen to step forward and donate their time and talent. Community ownership and volunteer operation where the two key principals behind the establishment of the NTC and they remain the driving force today. Not only is the Roxy community owned, it’s also community run. Apart from a paid projectionist and caretaker, all of our movies are staffed by volunteers; each year, approximately 1,000 people volunteer at the theatre, clocking in about 1,500 hours taking tickets, serving popcorn and cleaning up after the show. This number doesn’t include the numerous volunteers who are also involved in the groups and organizations that rent the facility for their events. While people have come and gone, the overall volunteer base hasn’t diminished since the organization’s establishment in 1988.
