Neighbours United

about

Our team is focused on innovative and inclusive solutions to keep your community healthy and safe. By developing the leadership and skills of your community we believe we can all live well together.

Neighbours United leads successful campaigns and programs. From the first complete deep engagement canvassing program on climate anywhere in the world, to helping over 100,000 people in 14 communities say yes to 100% renewable energy, to delivering over 3500 bags of locally grown food to people in-need, to defending nature from ultra-wealthy CEOs and their corporations — we are powered by over 20,000 supporters. Neighbours United has received several awards. For 2022, Canada’s Clean50 gave our deep engagement project a Top Project Award and an Emerging Leader Award to our Executive Director, Montana Burgess. In 2022, Neighbours United was the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Awards Winner from Charity Village. In 2020, Neighbours United became a certified Living Wage Employer and proudly maintains the certification. The Trail & District Chamber of Commerce gave Neighbours United the Nonprofit of the Year award in 2020 and Business of the Year in 2019.

Program Details: Deep Engagement Canvassing

You can make a positive & lasting difference. Join us. Climate change, conservation, and energy problems are not environmental problems, they are people problems.

For too long we’ve been divided on how to move forward on solutions to big problems that affect people every day. And to get enough of us working toward the same solutions, we need to do something we haven’t done before: We need to listen.

We need to listen to people with different views and instead listen for and focus on what we have in common.

Deep community engagement, or deep canvassing, is a practice for having honest and nonjudgmental conversations (in person or over the phone) that last 10-25 minutes with someone who feels differently about an issue than you might.

The deep canvasser shares personal life experiences & encourages other person to do the same. The outcome? After being deep canvassed, 1 in 3 people people shift their opinion in favour of the solution they are presented with, and this change lasts.

By sharing vulnerable stories and truly getting at the emotional heart of the issues that divide us, we can overcome polarization and prejudice.

“I’m supporting a good effort, and I believe it will make a positive contribution in our community and therefore the world.” – RaNae, Deep Canvassing Volunteer

70% of Canadians want their governments to do more to address climate change. But when it comes to showing support for policies that address climate change, they are hesitant to take action to support these policies.

For lasting policy changes we need rural, small town and suburban residents, as well as urban Canadians, to support the clean energy transition. Since early 2020, our team has knocked on thousands of doors to deeply engage with people in our communities we don’t typically talk with. In these conversations, 1 in 3 people resolve their internal conflict and shift their beliefs and behaviours in a lasting way.Our communications project Living Here, shares stories about the root problems we’re hearing in the deep canvasses, and the solutions everyday people are taking to move forward. We are the first Canadian organization doing deep canvassing work on environmental issues and you are invited to join us.

Farms to Friends: Providing fresh, healthy produce to families since 2021.

Farms to Friends was created to provide those in-need with nutritious, fresh, locally grown food. Since then, Farms to Friends has delivered over 4000 bags of fresh food to families and seniors, invested over $240,000 directly into the community through farmers and local food producers, and provides fresh produce to over 260 individuals including over 60 families with children annually.

“I have been able to create new things out of fresh and healthy foods PLUS my little guy is slowly warming up to veggies because of this. It’s helped him realize where things come from and that veggies can actually taste good. With a bag full of fun new surprises at our door it’s become an adventure to try new things. I really want him to learn where food comes from. He’s had such a fun experience with these bags. He’s learning different ways to cook. We are very grateful for this opportunity.”

– Christa Abbott, Farms to Friends participant
